So I was just watching the timing of the F1 pre-season testing in Barcelona, and while most of the results are as I expected them, Mclaren sure is surprisingly quick.

but for how long will that last?

Perhaps Honda figured out their engine issues somewhat. I’d love to see Mercedes power toppled this season.
I’m pretty surprised to see Haas not dead last, they are running Ferrari power units but still surprised me a bit.

Rumblings on the paddock are that mclaren don’t like their car yet. I’m wondering if they’re pushing hard while most teams are stil stretchin and warming up. Renault revealed their new car is last year’s car but worse thanks to non-merc power. Haas is doing pretty well to fight sauber and I’ll bet by the end of testing they could nip at toro rosso.
We’ll have to see how these two weeks develop.

There’s too many ferrari components (that aren’t the engine) for their car to be the slowest.

I think to look at the times too critically would be a mistake, but a couple takeaways I had were that Mercedes reliability will again be strong, as they have already completed a racing distance in the first preseason test. Also, McLaren is starting well ahead of where they were last year.

*sees Ferrari’s time*
*pumps elbows*
*sees Mercedes’ time*
*burps*
*sees McLaren’s time*
Looks like they managed to close it to 3 seconds.
*sees Sauber’s time*
*sees Haas’ time*
*sees both teams’ laps taken*
That one doesn’t bode well for Haas. Good pace, but needs to improve “American reliability”.
*sees Renault’s time*
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *cringes*

Agreed that’s it’s not worthwhile to look too critically at the times set today, especially being the first day of testing. I read this elsewhere and haven’t verified it but apparently Seb already went half a second faster than his Qualifying time from last year. If accurate, it’s definitely noteworthy that Ferrari are already 0.5 seconds ahead of last year, likely with time still to be gained.

I wasn’t expecting a miracle, but that’s worse than I was expecting for Manor.

True, but I think a lot of that has to do with track temp. You can check out their testing times from last year here at the link below. Kimi & Vettel were both down in the 1:23's during testing but Vettel’s quali time was 1:25.4

Good points. Thinking about it later I also remembered that the tire compounds were probably not the same and that Pirelli was asked to make changes this year - I can’t remember if the change to wider front tires is happening this year or next but if it’s now that alone could explain big gains.
